This
past week most of us celebrated the end of summer
with Labor Day festivities that included relaxation
and one last trip to the beach; now we're in the throws
of fall with the beginning of school for children
and a sense of renewal for all of us. The fall always
seemed like a new beginning for me, where I would
make my plans for the "school" year, purchasing
new clothes and supplies.
Now
that my own children are in school, I feel like a
kid again, filled with the same excitement as I purchase
their new backpacks (what was wrong with last year's
backpack?~I'll never know), school pants (thanks to
over 2" of growth in all three sons), and lunch
boxes.
When
the subject of school lunches comes to mind, I have
distinct memories of my grade school cafeteria hamburgers
(with many curious little "things" in them).
I never really enjoyed the school-supplied lunches,
rather, my home-made lunch always made the grade.
To this day, I can still taste the sweet and salty
"mix" that my mom would create for me (imagine
Chex mix~generations before it's time, complete with
M & M's).
What's
hard to believe is how much things have changed since
we were children. School-aged children have more than
just the A-B-C's and 1-2-3's to keep their attention
all day. Now, most classrooms have at least one child
with a food allergy. According to, Robyn O'Brien,
Founder of Allergykids.com and our newest addition
to the FHI Online magazine writing community,
"Today,
at least one out of every 17 children under the age
of three
has a food allergy. That's at least five million American
children."
This
month Robyn writes about Our
Intimate Relationship with Food: A Complex Truth.
