Mother

Friday, May 6, 2005

It is only fitting that I dedicate this e-mail to everyone who is a mother, knows a mother, has a mother or wants to be a mother.  That should cover all of us.

What is a mother?  The answer is different for each of us,
yet very much the same.

Is she Mother Goose, Mother Theresa, Mother of Pearl, "Mother" Jones the miner's Angel, The Jewish Mother, Mother Earth, Mother-in-law or Old Mother Hubbard?  Maybe she has a little bit of all of them, rolled into one nice package.

As an infant, our mother (also know as "other") holds the mirror up for us to reflect what it is to be a person and to become the "self" that we are today. What kind of mirror do you reflect to your children or children in your life?  Do you reflect love for Mother Earth, for self, for others?  It is quite a task mother has, holding up this mirror for everyone, never once complaining about her sore arms!

As we grow up, we see our mother as the queen, the teacher, the source for love, care and approval and sometimes the source for discipline, pain and tears.  We long for her love and affection all the while doing our best to please.

Little did we know, she saw us in the same way: the "princess", her teacher (especially learning patience

in the grocery store check out line during tantrums),

the light of her life and her source for happiness and sometimes pain.

Recently, I had the pleasure of interviewing two super "Mom-preneurs" for an upcoming episode of our television series For Her Information.  Kay Allison, author and founder of the Energy Annex in Chicago (www.energyannex.com ) and Rita Winters, who also works at the Energy Annex and is an author as well (www.Ritawinters.com ).  Rita could relate to Kay when she said,

"I am constantly reinventing myself...taking inventory of what's inside and making positive changes in my life."

What mothers do to pull it together, keep it together and bring us together can really amaze you.  They are constantly keeping the balls in the air, pulling rabbits out of their hats and coming up with new and exciting ways to make life more interesting!

Did you know,

  • More fresh flowers and plants are sold for Mother's Day than any other day except Christmas.
  • According to Gallup, 53% of Americans say that mom is the person who had the greatest influence on their
    growing up years.
  • According to Harris Interactive, among teenage girls (that notoriously hard to please group) 68% admit to wanting to be like their mothers.
  • Gallup further reports that 48% of moms say that their own mothers are their best  friends.

Take a minute, call your mother, and let her know you care!
