Product Awarenss

September 20, 2006

With the increasing conscious awareness of today’s consumers, natural body products are making their way into more homes. As a result, some larger mainstream companies are detoxing their ingredients labels. Regardless, it pays to be a smart shopper~read the ingredient labels!

There’s been a wave of publicity about the mixed chemicals used in many mainstream moisturizers, hair products, lipsticks and even baby care products. Although a number of natural products companies now offer excellent alternatives, many cosmetics are still far from toxin-free.

How widespread is the problem? A survey called Skin Deep, done in June 2004 by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) —a leader in the drive to detox personal care products—found that:

  • 89 percent of the 10,500 ingredients used in face and body products have not been evaluated for safety by either the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) or cosmetics manufacturers;
  • one out of every 120 products contains known or probable carcinogens.
  • So what’s being done to remove these offenders? The good news is that groups both here and abroad are triggering a major makeover in the cosmetics industry.

What can you do to protect yourself and your family from these know carcinogens?

  • One way is simply to buy from the 88 companies that have signed the Compact for Safe Cosmetics—see the list at safecosmetics.org.
  • Or check out a specific product at ewg.org, the Environmental Working Group’s site. It rates the safety of 7,500 personal care items. Pick from its “Better Choices” lists, print and go shopping.

Out of the hundreds of substances banned from cosmetics sold in the European Union, phthalates were a top target. They are plastic-softening chemicals found commonly in nail polish, fragrances, hairsprays, deodorants and other products. But they’re often not listed on ingredients labels because they’re included in the catch-all term “fragrance”—or are part of compounds protected as trade secrets. (some secret!). In 2000, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention tested 289 people and found surprisingly high levels of phthalates in every one of them. Hundreds of studies have shown that phthalates can damage the liver, kidneys, lungs and reproductive systems. No wonder the EU banned them. Will the US?
