Embracing Gratitude
by Martha Ramirez

Martha Ramirez wrote her first children’s book, The Fabulous Adventures of Fred the Frog, after becoming inspired by the curiosity and fascination her toddler has with books. She lives with her husband and son in Northern California, where she is currently working on the series to her debut novel.

Can the power of gratitude enhance your life?

Everyone has their own way of showing appreciation, and many people believe this outward display of thanks can also inspire inner peace and harmony.

Different cultures have found many different ways to express gratitude. While we in the United States share turkey to honor things like the abundant fall harvest, people around the world are celebrating in other ways. Here are a few highlights.

  • In Japan, people give thanks for the blessings of the oceans, as well as for hope of the economic wealth of maritime industry, on Marine Day, the third Monday in July.
  • In Malaysia, Hari Hol is a day to remember the magnificent past and show gratitude for the royalties of the state.
  • n South India, families celebrate Pongal, a popular harvest thanksgiving festival. Everyone takes time out to thank the ones who have contributed to a successful harvest. The festival lasts four days and begins on January 14 of every year.

No matter what traditions you follow, being grateful for what you have brings a sense of well-being. So, take time to notice the little things that you might take for granted. Count your blessings—literally write them down. Blessings to consider: good health, family, friends, employment, shelter, food, clothing, talents, even FHI. After you’ve identified people to thank, take the next step and let them know.

There are plenty of ways you can show appreciation for your loved ones. Some of my favorites:

  • Send a warm note. Let your loved ones know how much you appreciate them and how blessed you are to have them in your life. Write from the heart. Don’t know what to say? Click here for some helpful messages.
  • Hug ’em. Don’t be shy. The sense of touch is known to lift spirits. An embrace is a simple gesture to let others know you care.
  • Return a favor. Exchange an act of kindness. You can even secretly do the deed. Nobody has to know about it. The most important part is that they are aware someone out there appreciates them.
  • Smile. You’ll never know whose day you’ll brighten up. A frown upside down can make a world of a difference.
  • Don’t forget to say thank you. Two easy words that can go a long way. Let them know you care.

The American tradition of Thanksgiving is, of course, a celebration of sharing. Reaching out to others in your community is a great way to express compassion and gratitude. Here are some ways you can reach out:

  • Visit a homeless shelter. Help out in feeding people who have been less fortunate. It’s guaranteed to fill your heart with appreciation.
  • Donate. Give the needy a reason to be a little less needy. Raid your closet and donate clothes you haven’t worn in years. If the clothes haven’t touched your skin within two to three years, chances are they won’t anytime soon. Give someone else the chance to wear them. Don’t know what to donate? You can always go to the blood bank and donate some blood.
  • Volunteer. You’ve got an extra minute here and there, why not give your time to the ones who could use the help? Check hospitals, nursing homes, the American Red Cross.
  • Share your talents. Everyone holds a hidden talent. Are you good at singing? Visit the elderly and sing them a tune. Or maybe you’re excellent at gardening. Surprise a neighbor and mow their lawn, maybe pluck some weeds (be sure they’re weeds!) Make good use of your talents.

Thanksgiving doesn’t have to happen just once a year. Take time to express your sincerest gratitude toward others. Enjoy your busy life, but don’t forget to embrace gratitude and show others you care.
