(Hair) Cutting Costs
by Bailey Horn

The economy’s looking lifeless these days, but that doesn’t mean your hair should follow suit. With a strategic, quality cut and simple at-home maintenance, you can keep your trips to the salon to a minimum without sacrificing style. I recently chatted with Suki Duggan, owner of Manhattan ’s Donsuki Townhouse Salon, to hear her top tips on keeping your hairstyle chic with minimum cost.

Know your roots. Highlights require less upkeep than one-color process hair. To make your color shine longer, ask your hair stylist to use different shades of color.

Fringe benefits. Although trendy and feisty, bangs require a lot of maintenance. If you don’t want to visit the salon twice a month, opt for longer bangs or start growing them out.

Level the playing field. Layering also requires more care than hair that is one length. If you are planning on layering your locks, beware that you will be paying for it twice a month. Consider going one length.

Coming up short. Going pixie won’t lessen the repair cost. It requires just as much or even more care than medium and long length hair, and can often require more frequent trims. Try a medium length cut instead.

Massage therapy. Instead of expensive in-salon hair masks and deep conditioning treatments, try daily scalp massages to maximize shine. Give yourself daily scalp massages when shampooing and conditioning your hair—it’ll only take a few minutes, and will leave hair looking shiny and healthy.
