It can seem like second nature for many women to overpack, but sometimes a short weekend trip allows for just one small suitcase, limiting our wardrobe to only what we need. Determining exactly what those items are, as many of us know, can be the hardest part.

The key to savvy packing is to consider your activities for the entire trip. Whether you’re going to visit your great-aunt or your best friend, there are some versatile basics to remember. Wardrobe stylist Jennifer Oppenheimer has put together a few outfits that she believes are perfect for hiking, sightseeing, shopping, dining and dancing.

The first essential outfit includes a pair of jeans topped off with a cute, comfortable tank and sweater. Make the outfit casual by pairing it with tennis shoes or add some spice with a sexy pair of heels. After simple adjustments like that, the ensemble feels neither over- nor under- dressed, making it a sure bet for a variety of occasions.

A weekend getaway offers an ideal chance to admire all the beautiful fall colors on a bike ride, hike or run, making comfortable workout clothes a must. Oppenheimer has selected some of her favorites from Lululemon that she says work well for either a high-impact fitness adventure or simply a casual afternoon stroll. Be sure to pick out pieces that make you feel good, like the bright top shown here.

For a night on the town, give that adorable summer dress one more wear before the weather no longer permits. Pair it with the same button-up sweater you wore with your jeans to stay warm as the harvest moon rises. A simple necklace and those hot heels will complete your look, leaving you looking fabulous for an evening soiree of dinner and dancing.

“Look for items that you can mix and match and that don’t add too much bulk in your suitcase. Look for fresh colors that will mask any unwanted jetlag,” advises Jennifer. And above all, don’t stress it. Your vacation and your packing will be more carefree with these creative space-saving tactics. And remember, not only will using these tips help lighten your load, you’ll also find good reason to splurge on those cute shoes you’ve been eyeing. With all the wear they’ll be getting, you won’t have to feel guilty about spending the extra buck!

“You can take this outfit from sporty casual to simple and sexy just by changing the shoe.”
“This outfit is so versatile you can wear it to workout or even just walk around in on a casual day during your trip.”
“Make an impact by incorporating this season’s modern metallic gold shoe to spice up your look.”
