5 Foods for Beautiful Skin
by Beth Aldrich

Beth Aldrich, mother of three, is an Integrative Health and Nutrition Coach, writer and public speaker, restoringessence.com. She is the publisher and founder of, forherinformation.com, the online magazine for women and is the host of the Seattle and online radio show, A Balanced Life with Beth Aldrich. Her favorite (occasional) treat is chocolate cream pie!

Beauty is not only skin deep. Turns out you can save money and face by focusing less on what you put on your skin and more on what you put in your mouth. Here are five delicious suggestions to consider:

Papaya
This antioxidant-filled, vitamin C-rich fruit helps fight wrinkles and maintains skin’s supple texture. It’s been shown to increase collagen production, improving skin’s strength and resiliency. And so yummy. Grab a bag from the freezer section until these yummies come back in season.

Kale and Spinach
Leafy greens like these are the key to radiant skin. They offer more nutrition per calorie than any other food, and are loaded with carotenoids, which can actually increase the SPR of your skin. They taste great in juice form, too.

Dark Chocolate
Many studies suggest that cocoa is rich in powerful antioxidants called flavanols, which increase blood flow, and in turn enhance your skin’s vibrancy. Not to mention put a smile on your face while you’re eating it. Go for chocolate that’s at least 70 percent cocoa for best results. Pair with red wine and you’ve got an elegant, easy dessert.

Wild Salmon
This coldwater fish provides one of the richest dietary sources of age-defying, anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and the antioxidant, astaxanthin. “This entrée choice also enhances healthy blood-flow which gives your skin a natural glow,” says skincare expert Carolyn Ash.

Blueberries
With plenty of vitamins and minerals, this bright little berry, fresh or frozen, carries many anti-wrinkle antioxidants and anti-inflammatory phytochemicals, leaving skin vibrant and supple.

Try mixing them all together by having a mixed salad with kale, spinach and lettuce topped with wild salmon and papaya; and for dessert enjoy low-fat vanilla yogurt topped with fresh blueberries and chocolate shavings from a 70 percent cocoa chocolate bar. Say cheese!
